Dear Parents

Welcome back to everyone at the start of the new school year and particularly to those parents and children starting at the school this week. I hope that you have had a good Summer break and that the children are keen to get started.

A newsletter will come home each Wednesday, though an extra one will come home this Friday from your child’s class with details of swimming, P.E., homework times, topics to be studied etc.

Staff news: Welcome to new members of the team: Miss Palin, Deputy Headteacher who is teaching in Year 3, to Mrs. Parker, Special Needs Co-ordinator, to Mrs. Evans who returns from maternity leave 3 days per week and to Mrs. McCreanor who will job share with Mrs. Evans in Year 3 for two days per week. Also welcome back to Miss Watkinson who will be job sharing for 2 days a week with Mrs. Burton in Year 4.

Swimming. I am delighted to be able to inform you of some great news about swimming. This year we are going to reinstate swimming for all classes throughout the year following a generous donation to cover last year’s losses. Oberthur, a company on the Ashchurch Trading Estate has kindly donated £3,000 as part of their support for the local community. As one of the world’s leading providers of security and identification based on smart card technology, they have decided to give their charity support to our swimming fund for the second year running. This together with the amount raised by the sponsored event with Sharon Davies has nearly covered the deficit from parents not paying last year. Clearly, this is a one-off return to full swimming – and unless all parents make the voluntary payment of £15 per term we will be cutting the provision by at least the same amount next year. A letter with payment slip for swimming will come home next week. I am very grateful to Oberthur for their generous donation. Swimming begins next week.

Reminders:

Please do not use the staff car park unless you are working in school. Cascades car park is free for 30 minutes as usual at the start and end of the day with a car park permit from school. Please avoid parking in Rope Walk to drop-off as this will endanger the children walking to school and can impede the residents who need to get in and out. To avoid endangering the children (or avoid committing an offence) please use the free parking in Cascades  with the free permit obtainable from school.

The school uniform should be worn at all times (polo shirt, red sweatshirt, grey trousers, shorts or skirt and school shoes). Sweatshirts are available from the office on Wednesday afternoons @ £8.50. Jewellery should not be worn to school – the school takes no responsibility for loss or damage. All adults enter school only through the front doors and obtain a security pass please – never by side doors or go round the rear of the school. The play train in the infant playground must only be used by children when a teacher is supervising. (Health & Safety). Children bringing bikes to school must wheel them on school premises and lock them in the cycle racks. We strongly encourage healthy snacks at breaktimes for all the children, fruit is ideal. KS1 children are supplied with fruit each day through a government initiative; please help us by sending fruit for KS2 children rather than crisps. Class assemblies to which parents will be invited are on Fridays at 1.05 p.m. On advice from health professionals, school staff do not administer medicines in school. No smoking at all on school site.

School lunches are available @ £1.90 per day (£9.50 per week) payable in advance on Mondays. Please use the envelopes (cheques: Gloucestershire County Council) in the entrance hall and send lunch money to your child’s class teacher for registering – not to the office window please. School packed lunches (brown bag) will continue for 5 weeks and stop on the 6th week of term – a reminder will be sent home together with the new Autumn/Winter menu.

Health & Safety regulations mean that a permission slip is compulsory for children to leave school premises with the class for swimming, walks to Holy Trinity, the Abbey etc. These can be completed once a year to avoid reams of paper and reminders. Please complete the form below and return it to your child’s classteacher tomorrow. It would be helpful not to have to send you reminders as this is compulsory.
